On our last day in Reno we visited Virginia City about 30 miles away deep in the mountains. Depending on how you view history, Virginia City was either a boom town where over $400 million of gold and silver was mined from the Comstock Lode or the place where Hoss and Little Joe went looking for a good time. It was also the place where Mark Twain had his first paid writing job working on the local paper.Today it survives on tourism and bikers.
We wandered through stores up and down the main street. Terry took, what seemed to me, far to much interest in the displays at the Historic Red Light District Museum. My own objective was to be photographed downing a beer at the bar of the Bucket of Blood Saloon.
Before getting there I stopped in the Union Brewery for a beer and to take a picture of the bra collection. Female patrons donate their bras which end up hanging from ceiling fans or anywhere else a bra can be hung. It reminded me of the Traildust Steakhouse where, if you wear a tie they cut it off and hang it on the wall. I've seen ties cut off though and it seems like the Union Brewery has a much more entertaining concept. Next I got my picture taken as planned, but the first beer must have had an effect since I wandered into the wrong bar. I had my picture taken at the Brass Rail (as you might surmise from the brass rail in the photo). As it turns out the Brass Rail is a lesbian biker bar. Those lesbians sure did recommend a nice dark beer to try though. When I actually got to the Bucket of Blood, Terry was worried about my driving back down the narrow, winding mountain roads after a third pint so I settled for a T-shirt. Maybe next time.
